Two suspected U.S. missile strikes killed 28 people Friday in northwest Pakistan, military sources and local and intelligence officials said.
In the first strike, suspected U.S. missiles from two unmanned drones hit a village in North Waziristan, a region near the Afghan border, killing 21 people, local and intelligence officials said.
According to the officials, the attack occurred in a village in Mir Ali. The missiles hit a house, which then burned to the ground, the officials said. It was not immediately clear if those killed, who were not identified, had been inside.
But The Associated Press reported, citing intelligence sources, that one of those killed was al Qaeda operative Abu Kasha.
The sources said he had been living in the area about three years and helped organize attacks in Afghanistan.
Later, two suspected U.S. drones fired two missiles at a house in South Waziristan, killing seven people, local and military and intelligence sources said.
Five of the dead were suspected to have been Arab fighters, a tribal chief said.
Five people also were injured in the attack, which occurred around 10:30 p.m. in a village near Wana, according to local and intelligence sources.
No other details were immediately available, and there was no immediate reaction from the U.S. military.
With these latest strikes, suspected U.S. missiles have hit targets nine times in Pakistan in October, according to a CNN tally.
The strikes have rankled relations between Pakistan and the United States. Earlier this week, Pakistan’s government said it had summoned Ambassador Anne Patterson to lodge a formal protest against the missile strikes.
Patterson was also told that the attacks have cost lives and undermined public support for Pakistan’s counter-terrorism efforts, Pakistan’s foreign ministry said. Last week, Pakistan’s parliament passed a resolution that condemned any incursion on Pakistani soil by foreign forces.
